Who called?

I'm feeling really down about the new polling numbers . What is happening? Why is this race so close?

I'm thinking about places to hide and weep, when my phone rings. Its Hope. She's calling from the Obama campaign to invite me to the opening of a field office. She's a volunteer.

Things seem a little better again...

Fear not. McCain got high coverage, and a lot of the polling is based on predictions of turnout by partisan identification. My suspicion is that all of the polls are undercounting younger African-American votes who are both more likely to vote for Obama AND are harder to reach by landlines, since more rely on cell phones. A lot of city dwellers don't even have land lines any more; I don't. But Obama is hitting those cell numbers like mad; that's why he collected them in the Biden announcement.

What African-American Obama supporter is going to want to give up the opportunity to vote for the first Black president, to be the only one in the family? But Chuck Todd and Rasmussen can't find them in a directory as easily to poll them.

Who's easy to reach on a land line? Old white people who've lived in the same house and sitting in the same barcalounger for 25 years, and don't use new technology.

Hi Speeker,

I felt the same confused way when I heard the poll results this morning. Then I read this quote from Leonard Michaels and felt strangely comforted:

"There is always something for which there is no accounting. Take, for example, the whole world."

And reading Bruce Godfrey's demographic explanation makes me feel even better.

Is Bruce slamming Obama's grandmother??
